Different types of prepaid meter

Prepaid electricity meters are now standard across Nigeria’s 11 DisCos, helping over 12 million households avoid estimated billing disputes by paying upfront for tokens. But not all prepaid meters are the same, and understanding these differences ensures you get the right meter and recharge it efficiently.

Here’s a breakdown of the main types of prepaid meters approved by NEMSA (Nigeria Electricity Management Services Agency).

Types of Prepaid Meters

1. Single Phase Prepaid Meters

Single Phase PPM Compact Type 5(60)A 240V

These are the most popular and most used meters for Nigerian homes and small apartments. They handle standard household loads, like lights, fans, fridge, TV, and AC up to 60 amps at 240 volts. Compact design means one self-contained box—no separate parts.

Single Phase PPM Split Unit Type 5(60)A 240V

This is the same capacity as compact but split into two parts: a meter box (outside) and a remote keypad/dispenser (inside your home). Ideal for security or aesthetics—keypad can be installed away from the main meter.

2. Three-Phase Prepaid Meters

Three Phase PPM Compact Type 3×5(60)A 415V

When households or businesses exceed single-phase capacity, three three-phase prepaid meters step in. These operate at 415 volts across three wires with a 3×5(60)A rating, supporting heavier industrial or commercial loads.

3. Smart Prepaid Meters

Smart prepaid meters represent the evolution of traditional models, blending prepaid functionality with IoT connectivity. Equipped with 4G SIM cards or GPRS modules, these NEMSA-approved units enable remote recharges, real-time usage tracking via apps or USSD, and automatic outage alerts to DisCos.
