DStv parental control

DStv parental control is one of the most useful tools for any home with kids or teens. It helps you decide what can be watched freely, or which channels should be blocked completely.

Once your DStv subscription is active and paid for—whether you renew directly or through VTpass—you can use parental control to decide exactly what your kids see on TV.

What DStv parental control actually does

DStv parental control works by combining a PIN with age ratings and channel settings. When you turn it on, the decoder checks every programme’s age rating and your chosen rules. If the show is above your allowed level, or if the entire channel is blocked, the decoder will display a message like “PG blocked” or ask for your PIN before it plays.

How to activate parental control on your DStv decoder

  • Press the blue DStv button on your remote to open the main menu on your Explora or HD decoder.
  • Scroll to Settings and select Parental Control; you’ll see options like PG Settings, Age Restrictions, Channel Blocking, and PG PIN.
  • When prompted for a PIN the first time, enter the default (usually 1234) if you have never changed it.
  • Go to PG Settings or Parental Level and change global blocking from “Off” to “Personalize” so your choices take effect.
  • Choose the age level that matches the youngest child at home (for example, Family, PG13, 16, or 18).
  • Save your changes and exit the menu so the decoder applies your new parental control rules.

Age restrictions vs blocking specific channels?

There are two main ways to protect your kids: age ratings and channel blocking. Age restriction is broad. You pick an allowed level (for example, PG-13), and DStv will quietly lock any show with a higher rating. That means a movie rated 18 or an adult show cannot play unless you enter the code.

Channel blocking is more direct. Instead of depending only on ratings, you can tell the decoder to block entire channels that you never want kids to open—such as adult content channels or certain movie or reality channels.

You find this under Channel Blocking inside the Parental Control menu, tick the channels you want to block, and save. If you want to watch them, you will need the PIN. You can use both age and channel locking

How to reset a forgotten DStv parental control PIN

Sometimes parents forget the PIN, especially if it was set a long time ago or by someone else. If you type the wrong PIN too many times, the decoder may lock you out for a short period before letting you try again.

In that case, you have two main options. One is to do a factory reset on the decoder, and this often restores the parental control PIN back to the default code of 1234. The downside is that a factory reset can also clear your personal settings and force the decoder to rescan channels, so use this option carefully.

The second option is to contact DStv support. You can reach them through official call centres, social media, or self‑service channels. They will walk you through a reset process or update the PIN from their side after confirming your account details. Once the PIN is reset, remember to log back into Parental Control and change it from the default to a new, secure code immediately.

Conclusion

Parental control only protects your home when the DStv subscription itself is active. If your bouquet expires, the decoder stops showing channels, and all the careful settings make no difference until you renew. To avoid that sudden blank screen,  stay on top it with VTpass. Renew your DStv from your phone in seconds.
